Today I had a conference about Gender with 200 rwandan people and 10 foreigners. In the discussion, the various opinions making me so excited were expressed from different point of view. So I really appreciate this opportunity to share our minds and learn theoretical perspective of Gender Equality.
However, despise academical conversation in the discussion, I realize that it is only in terms of theory that men could agree with and understand the women's opinion. Just after saying that gender equality should come true through the change of whole society, they say that they cannot wash their children because this work is reserved for women !!
I am strongly sure that men never understand the feeling of women. Off course I know there are many men who care about gender issues with all their heart. However it is women who can really address the gender issues and help themselves. Most of people who have power, I mean men, cannot know the feeling of those who take lower statues than these of mens. I think that is why they sometimes unconsciously violate the right of women.
Some men asked the question that "the notion of gender equality came from outside, European country, then, accepting the imposition of western thoughts can be good for us?" I really agree with the importance of protecting tradition. Thus I think Rwanda don't need to accept any western notion, even human rights. Because nobody can say that western culture is always better than rwandaise. It is not the truth.
However, it matters little if rwandaise chose to adapt the notion of Gender Equality that came from european because it is only a one of tools in which we might improve the statues of women.
The point is that IS THERE ANY PEOPLE WHO SUFFER FROM PRESENT SITUATION?
The question is simple. There are people in need. Why not help them? How can we help though which from today?
To advocate the idea of Gender Equality is one of the tools in order to make everyone recognize that issue. If rwandaise don't want to westernized any more, no one should force them to use. Instead, problems are there. How can we address? What is the way to changing society?
It is the next step.
